Spirit Messenger
Reflections by Rev. Kevin
In the United Methodist Church we have a structure that helps to hold us accountable to the connection, and to be responsible for keeping our ministries in focus. Every year, as part of the structure, we hold a Charge Conference. At the annual Charge Conference salaries are set, goals adopted, and reports are given and received. It is a mandatory meeting in our discipline. To many, this has become a “required meeting that is long and boring.” And many choose not to attend.
Our annual Charge Conference was held on October 2nd. We met and set salaries, adopted goals, and gave and received the proper reports. But that was not what I carried away from this gathering. We also were challenged to be about the task of searching scriptures, and finding our story. In the midst of the Bible story we find ourselves. Some said they feel like David facing Goliath; thankful that they have a heart for God. Others saw the church as the Good Samaritan, a place that meets the needs of many different people, and makes them feel like they belong. Drakesville saw themselves as the story of Dorcas, reaching out to others, joyfully serving, and quilting a coat of many colors. Bill Poland commented he felt the story of the Exodus encompasses the story of the South Central District. Some of us are afraid of change, wanting to go back to the old way of doing things, even if it is enslaving, or if the new ways really will become freeing. (I think he was directing that one at me – I have felt that way in some of the changes that have happened.)
As I come away from the conference, I am thankful I went. We worshipped, shared stories, and communed together. Maybe that is what the church is all about! Let us gather and share stories as we worship and commune together.
I hope to see you in church Sunday!
In Christ, Pastor Kevin
“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” -- John Wesley

BLOOMFIELD CHURCH GOALS FOR 2009 ADOPTED BY CHARGE CONFERENCE

2. Train people to be better hosts as greeters.
3. Have more laity involved in visiting elderly and sick.
4. Combine worship several times a year.
5. Invite young families and get them involved.
6. Encourage more participation in small group ministries.
WE’VE RAISED THE ROOF!

Dearborn Roofing Roofed the Church
The Trustees thank you for your contributions to the project fund this summer, as we were able to complete the roofing, windows and sidewalk projects at Bloomfield without taking out a loan!

Dearborn Roofing at the peak of the church building!
SNOW REMOVAL BIDS ACCEPTED!
The board of trustees announces they are receiving bids for snow removal at the Bloomfield UMC. We will open the bids on November 12. All bids should be in the office by noon November 12.
BLOOMFIELD FINANCE CAMPAIGN
The Bloomfield finance committee is going to produce a very low-key campaign this year as we promote our budget. A very modest increase of 4% over 2008 is our projected budget! We are right on track with our 2008 income and expenses. We are being good stewards of what God has blessed us with through your giving. We hope that you will consider giving at the same level as this year, or if possible increasing your pledge for 2009.
We are doing one Sunday of pledging – Sunday November 16th. You will receive a mailing in early November asking you to consider your pledge, and a pledge card. We do not want to burden your hearts, but we invite you continue to bless the church with your prayers, your presence, your service and your financial support. As we traverse these tough economic times together, we will stand on Christ the solid rock, and support one another in fellowship and in deed.
Now is the time to turn toward God and find out what He requires. Please join us in worship each week!
Landscaping /God-scaping:
As I look out my window in the Bloomfield office, I see a work in progress. It started with the side-walk replacement, which turned into a landscaping project! It will be beautiful in time, but this second week of October there is caution tape around the landscape area. It reminds me of the work needing to be done inside me as a Christian. I am a work in progress. I have periods where I am in need of a spiritual face-lift. And I go through seasons of caution, and then hopefully fertile ground is tilled and soon new plants will grow. I am excited to see what will grow outside my office window. I am just as excited to see what God will grow in our spiritual gardens with His God-scaping. I hope you too are looking forward to seeing the improvements to the outside of the church, but let us improve our spiritual lives too! Come and grow with me in our understanding of Christ. May God add blessing to you and your garden.
CHANCEL CHOIR REHEARSALS
The Chancel choir rehearsals are each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. We invite all interested junior high, high school and adult singers to join us! We look forward to a great year and hope to have several new members this fall.
Please contact a choir member or Karen Spurgeon if you know of someone who is not currently a choir member and should receive a special invitation.
YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN OUR
PRAISE TEAM & YOUTH PRAISE CHOIR!
The Praise Team and Youth Praise Choir are both
directed by Tracy Emmons at the 8:00 Celebration Service. Those who
are Third Grade and older are encouraged to participate in the Praise
Team. We begin with a Prelude of Praise at 7:45 and we lead the
singing every Sunday, sharing special songs on occasion at the 8:00
service. Each Sunday after the 8:00 am service from 9:00 to 9:30 the
Praise team prepares for the following Sunday.
Anyone wishing to
join the Praise Team is asked to contact Tracy Emmons 664-1030. The
Praise Team is a leadership position and as leaders we want to
continue to grow closer to God through the learning of His Word and
the fellowship of other believers, therefore Praise team members are
required to be involved in either Sunday School, Youth Group or
Ye'Gads. Note: Praise Team hours are approved hours of service for
Confirmation students.

CREATING CHRISMONS!
Bloomfield Worship Committee
invites you!
Chrismons are Christian symbols made into tree ornaments. They include crosses, and other intricate symbols, usually created from a white material, outlined in gold.
We use these decorations to adorn our tree in the Sanctuary. Over the past few years, we have noticed our Chrismons have become very warn and frail. The worship committee is hosting a Chrismon party on Sunday November 2 to create new ones for display this Advent. We invite the congregation to bring a salad to share for the meal at noon (barbequed pork sandwiches provided), followed by a craft party to make Chrismons and other decorations. We will also provide crafts and games for children to participate in while others make decorations. It will be a family day of fun!

THE LORD’S CUPBOARD
During the end of summer and the beginning of fall the Lord’s
Cupboard has seen a significant increase in demand for food.
We would welcome both food contributions and cash donations. The cash allows us to provide certificates to Keith’s for the fresh foods such as dairy. In September the bill was over $1000.
Please give to the Lord’s Cupboard to help feed local needs.
There is a basket at the Bloomfield church to put your food donations into.

DRAKESVILLE
SUNDAY SCHOOL
Several people have begun exploring the possibility of holding Sunday School again at the Drakesville Church. We are currently praying that God raise up some individuals with hearts for children to lead the program. My goal is to have leaders in place by January of 2009 to begin classes. It can happen with God’s help, and with we (the children of God) responding to his call. Please pray for His guidance in the planning!
DRAKESVILLE UMW NEWS
“The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.”
The Drakesville United Methodist Women met on September 24th after the summer hiatus. Six of the nine members were in attendance. President Eileen Bolin called the meeting to order and gave a devotion and offered prayer.
Each year a Special Mission Recognition Pin is given to someone in the congregation as recognition for the devoted service to the Drakesville United Methodist Church. The following nominees were submitted: Charlene Allen, Sue Gingerich and Kathy Moore. All active members of our unit will vote by ballot and presentation of the pin will be held later this year.
A slate of officers for the 2009 term was voted on and presented as follows: Eileen Bolin, President; Linda Perry, Vice President; Marilyn McElderry, Treasurer; Kathy Moore, Secretary; Sue Gingerich, Program Resource.
We reminded that October is Pastor Appreciation month. We have been blessed to have Pastor Kevin as our Shepherd for nine years now. What can you do to let him know that he is appreciated?

Y’e GADS / PIONEER CLUB:
Our after school program is using a curriculum designed by Pioneer Clubs, called “Exploring God’s Word.” Y’e GADS is a place where kids will have fun with friends, learn Christian values, and form positive Christian relationships. We meet every Wednesday during the school year from 3:30 -5. (We do not meet on early out days.)
September was a good month. Along with our regular class we participated in Homecoming at the school! 24 youth and several adults rode the float! It was a great time!
If you have a child in 1st – 6th grade please have them give Y’e GADS a try. I am sure they will find it has returned to the fun-filled, Christ-nurtured place it began. We are open to any and all children in Davis County! So invite friends and come along for the journey with God. We meet again October 22nd!
RAINBOW & FRIENDS PRESCHOOL
The month of October will be very busy at Preschool. We will be taking a field trip to the Bloomfield Fire Station at the beginning of the month, as well as learning some fire safety tips. We will also venture to the pumpkin patch later this month for the children to see all the different shapes and sizes of pumpkins, and they will each get to pick a pumpkin out to take home. At the end of the month we will be having our Fall Harvest Parties honoring God for His bountiful blessings!
The students are settling into the routine of what to do during the school setting and are harvesting new skills daily. The four-year-old class is working on letter writing, along with phonetic sounds and symbols. The three-year-old class has been busy working on colors and shapes, along with fine and gross motor skills. We have been enjoying many fall stories and activities.
Thank you to all of you who have donated snacks, juice, supplies, or have given a monetary donation. Your gifts are so appreciated. We are so thankful. Continue to pray for Miss Mary and I that we will teach these little hearts what God would want us to teach them. Pray for the families of these children and for the little children themselves. Your support of this Christian mission is so important to us. Thank you…….Mrs. Greiner
PRAYER BREAKFAST
There is a group of people meeting every Tuesday at 6:30 am in Bloomfield for breakfast and prayer. We are using the Upper Room Devotional as a guide, and share a meal and devotions. We are done by 7:30. All are welcome to come and join us!
BLOOMFIELD OCTOBER U.M.W. HIGHLIGHTS
“God’s goodness hath been great to thee. Let never day nor night unhallowed pass but still remember what the Lord hat done.” William Shakespeare.
Thank you to all who supported the U.M.W. Fall Rummage sale held in September. Whether you brought in articles for the sale, helped ready the clothes and miscellaneous articles by setting everything up, worked as cashiers, or helped in taking things down, whatever you did your help was greatly appreciated. A very special thanks to Barb Gravett who chaired this monumental undertaking and her crew for doing such a great job. The sale brought in $1,069.98, after expenses. 10% of this was given toward church missions with the remaining $962.99 being designated to go toward our U.M.W. Mission Giving. Praise be to God for providing us this in order that we may then share God’s love both locally and globally.
A reminder to all U.M.W. members that our World Thank Offering is due in October. Please remember to bring your offering to the November 5th meeting.
The Thanksgiving In-Gathering will be held on Saturday, November 1st. Members may bring your kits to the church office by October 27th. Please mark your kits with U.M.W. on them so we may receive credit toward being a Mission Today unit.
Our November General Meeting will be held on November 5th. The meeting will begin at 11:00 a.m. Program is Mary Lou Nichols. Circle of Faith will host a potato bar at noon.
Autumn is one of my favorite ties of year. I would like to share with you a poem from an old IDEALS magazine of mine.
“We thank you, God, Our Father,
For the beauty in the world.
Especially each autumn
When your colors are unfurled.
The crispness of the weather
Brings the colors from within,
As leaves portray Your splendor
How we love to take it in!
Dear God, we, too, have beauty
Sometimes shielded, out of view.
How we long to show our colors
And reflect the joy of You.
But sometimes cares and worries
Make our vision dulled and gray
And the colors of Your presence
Don’t shine forth in grand display.
So teach us, Lord, to listen,
To honor, and obey.
Help us to share You freely
As we travel on life’s way.
Give our lives real inner beauty.
Thank You for forgiving sin.
Let us share the joy of Jesus
And not keep the beauty in.
